Medical Social Worker

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Medical Social Worker (HPC / MSW 2) in the Medical Social Work Department at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Requirements

• Bachelors Degree in Medical Social Work.
• Knowledge about social work legislation dealing with the rights of individuals.

Duties

Under the general directions of the Head -Medical Social Work Department the individual will:

• Assess the social, emotional and economic factors relevant to medical diagnosis and treatment and communicates these to other members of the health team.
• Helps the patient by therapeutic  case work or group therapy to solve problems that may be causing anxiety and strain or which may delay response to medical treatment.
• Helps patient to accept and adjust to illness and disability.
• Provides counseling for members of Hospital Staff regarding social and economic problems.
• Provides counseling and makes referrals to appropriate agencies for victims. (Family violence, child abuse,spouse abuse, elderly abuse etc.).
• Helps the patient and family to use community resources. Assist with the registration in appropriate agencies, recommends activities which facilitates the necessary social interaction and which provide the necessary therapy.
• Ensures that adequate records are kept and reports done to facilitate continuity of care.
• Follow-up to ensure and assess the patients compliance with diets and other treatments.
