The National Public Health Laboratory is the central laboratory of the public sector network of laboratories. It provides public health laboratory functions as well as clinical diagnostic services for the major hospital in the SERHA region. This laboratory is the islands main Reference and Referral laboratory.
SCOPE OF POSITION
Performs analytical laboratory testing of body, fluids, tissues water samples, dairy samples, blood samples, stool, urine, sputum, swabs and food products to provide data for use in the identification of pathogens and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
This is the first level of professional Medical Technology work, done under the supervision of a higher level Medical Technologist. Accountable to the level 2 Technologist.
Qualification
- A Degree in Medical Technology attained from UTECH, NCU or other reputable Institutions within the Region or Internationally plus completion of the prescribed period of Internship.
Responsibilities
- Receives samples, records description, prepares slides, stains tissues, makes microscopic examination. Prepares bacteriological media to be used in propagating cultures, Prepares
simple reagents for use in clinical laboratory tests. - Cultivates pathologic bacteria and other micro organisms detection and identification of
diseases such as typhoid, cholera, tuberculosis, diphtheria. - Takes blood samples, carries out qualitative screen of all blood serum, performs tests to
identify abnormalities such as sickle cell anaemia, Coagulation disorders, hypertension and diabetes. - Prepares films of blood to determine white blood cells differential cell count, Identifies
blood group. - Prepares serological samples to provide qualitative and quantitative analysis of antibodies to specific diseases.
- Keeps files of tests completed and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Gives guidance to Technical Assistant and evaluates job functions of the Technical
Assistant and submits evaluation to the level 2 technologist for review. - Duty Officer for Emergency Duties.
- Participates in local and overseas seminars, workshops and conferences.
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Histopathology,
Blood Banking, Haematology and Cytology. - Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of the care and preservation of specimens.
- Knowledge of the care and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Applies knowledge in the principles of methodology.
- Ability to accurately perform standard laboratory procedures, and to observe results.
- Demonstrates professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professionals and with the public,
- Skills in operating laboratory equipment and apparatus.
- Skills in collecting specimens efficiently and painlessly,
Recommended membership
- Membership in the Caribbean Association of Medical Technologists (CASMET).
- Other memberships in similar professional associations.
Special requirements
- Registration by the Council of Professions Supplementary of Medicine.
