Nurse Manager (HPC/RN3)


Position: Nurse Manager (HPC/RN3)

JOB PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Director of the National Blood Transfusion Service, the Nurse Manager is the manager of the donor room and supervises the Nurses, Technical Assistants and Ancillary Staff. The Nurse Manager coordinates staffing for blood donor drives, supervises the general management of the donor before, during and after donation, provides counselling and referral to the appropriate specialty.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at an accredited institution
  • Master’s degree in Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, Clinical Nurse Specialist or an equivalent degree in relevant specialist training
  • At least five (5) years working experience in clinical practice
  • Registered with the Nursing Council in Jamaica
  • BLS or ACLS certification is recommended

 

Responsibilities

Management/Administrative Responsibilities

  • Performs the staffing Rota for blood drives
  • Ensures adequate staffing and supplies for mobile blood drives
  • Assists in training nursing and phlebotomy students
  • Organizes staff activities and supervises staff in the donor room
  • Provides a hospitable atmosphere for both staff and donors

 

Technical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintains medical and nonmedical supplies for blood donation
  • Ensures procurement/proper functioning of equipment and supplies
  • Counsel donors and implements a referral system based on interview data initial testing results
  • Provides performance evaluations of the staff supervised by the Nurse Manager

 

SPECIAL CONDITION ASSOCIATED WITH JOB

  • May be required to work outside of working hours, and or on weekends
  • Participate in blood donor drives off site and to work at different locations island wide
  • May be required to receive appropriate vaccinations
  • May be required to attend specific workshops/symposiums or acquire additional training
  • Engages donors in education

 

Key outputs

  • Maintenance of resuscitation equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures familiarity of staff with resuscitation measures/procedure.
  • Manages and assists in daily activities in the blood donor room.
  • Carry out physical examinations if necessary.
  • Arranges necessary counselling based on interview answers or initial testing results.
  • Engages donors in education and donating, phlebotomy care and complications.
  • Responsible for the organization of donor interviews, donor phlebotomy and resuscitation.

 

Required competencies

  • Sound Knowledge of resuscitation procedures
  • Sound Knowledge of phlebotomy/venepuncture and ability to teach staff
  • Knowledge in counselling procedures
  • Competency in customer service/patient relations
  • Proficiency in the use of computer software
