The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA), a Statutory Body under the Ministry of Health responsible for the management and operation of Public Health Services within the Parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the following position Clarendon Health Department:
MEDICAL SOCIAL WORKER (HPC/MSW1)
(salary range $1,241,070 - $1,475,242) per annum and any allowance (s) attached to the post)
Under the general supervision of the Medical Officer (Health) and Regional Social Worker, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing holistic treatment care and support; the Medical Social Worker has responsibility to conduct comprehensive social investigations in order to identify the social, emotional and economic needs of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and initiate appropriate case management strategies.
Qualification and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited tertiary institution.
- Successful completion of internship.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in public health system.
- Experience of working with PLWHA is desirable.
Responsibilities
- Assessing the social, emotional and economic factors relevant to medical diagnosis and treatment, as well as communicating those to other members of the health team.
- Consulting regularly with other members of the health team to find ways of helping patients and families to cope with any personal and environmental stress that might be impeding recovery.
- Visiting the homes of patients and other relevant persons/places in order to make social assessments.
- Making follow-up visits to discharged patients to continue therapeutic casework, family counseling and ensuring that necessary family visits are made.
- Informing the relevant authorities of cases of abandonment, child abuse and neglect and ensuring the appropriate follow-up of such cases.
- Helping patients and their families in the utilizing community resources.
- Identifying and communicating with the public, voluntary and private agencies and applying available resources to the needs of patients.
Required Skills & Specialized Techniques
- Comprehensive knowledge of the scope and methods of social work.
- Sound knowledge of the environment and community resources.
- Working knowledge of the public health systems relating to the delivery of health care.
- Well developed interviewing skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written format.
- Good analytical skills.
- Ability to relate to individuals and groups of varying educational backgrounds.
