About Local Partner Development
Local Partner Development is a six-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development and implemented by FHI 360. The project seeks to support the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative framework by collaborating with key actors from government, civil society, academia and private sector to effectively advance youth crime and violence prevention.
In this regard, Local Partner Development seeks to improve the capacities of its key partners to design and implement sustainable evidence-based secondary and tertiary youth crime prevention interventions. These targeted initiatives will enhance partners’ knowledge, skills and the enabling environment for their work
Background
The Community Renewal Programme, coordinated and monitored by the Planning Institute of Jamaica(PIOJ), was established to provide a platform for the coordination and enhancement of the delivery of government and civil society services to volatile and vulnerable communities. It provides a mechanism for coordinating activities at the community level, with a focus on social transformation, socio-economic development, physical transformation, youth development, governance and safety and justice.
To address the issue of crime and violence that continue to plague Jamaica, the PIOJ through the CRP, has provided a platform for the coordination and enhancement of the delivery of government and civil society services to these targeted communities.
To enhance its community renewal initiative in St. James, PIOJ is implementing the “Partnership Towards Youth Crime & Violence Prevention in Montego Bay” Project, funded by USAID Local Partner Development (LPD).To be implemented in collaboration with several stakeholders, LPD and PIOJ will coordinate the delivery of a set of services to engage and treat with80 unattached and highly at-risk youth between the ages of 14 to 29 from the communities of Salt Spring and Flanker, with the aim of reducing their risk levels and improving their employability.
Utilizing a case management approach, the interventions will aim to reduce risky behavior that generate a greater propensity for youth within these communities to commit violent acts and/or a crime. The case management approach will be guided by the framework developed by the Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJP), in close coordination with a core group of organizations that will provide services and other inputs for interventions
