Coordinator, Medical Services


Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the post of:

Coordinator, Medical Services (HPC/MO 3), Specialized and Medical Services Division

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Director of Medical Services, the Coordinator Medical Services provides supervision to the team of Medical Officers who deliver primary and continuing medical care to inmates/wards and are usually the first contact for patients needing medical service.

Requirements

  •  Holder of a Medical Degree;
  • Five (5) years experience in the field of General Practice;
  • Firsthand experience in developing services in a constantly changing environment and tight budgetary restraints;
  • Experience in working with the socially deprived, institutions, chronic medical conditions, mental health and HIV positive patients;
  • Knowledge of various clinical techniques, diseases, medical terminologies and other medical functions;
  • Experience in handling medical and administrative duties with minimum supervision;
  • At least 2 years experience working in a Management/Coordination position;
  • Working knowledge of Government of Jamaica Health Regulations and policies.

 

Responsibilities

Management/Administrative Responsibilities

  • Supervises the day-to-day health staff to ensure smooth and effective operations;
  • Monitors staff work assignments, workloads and work schedules;
  • Coordinate interactions/relationships between staff, inmates/wards, and all other program stakeholders;
  • Participate in the coordination of meetings and communicate relevant information to the Director, Medical Services and other health staff.

Technical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Visits hospitals to monitor condition of patients that are hospitalized;
  • Responds to medical/health problems presented by patients including history taking, diagnosis, investigates, treats and makes referrals as appropriate;
  • Maintains confidentiality and impartiality;
  • Promotes health education in conjunction with other health professionals;
  • Organizes preventative medical programmes for individual inmates/wards;
  • Provides specialist care for specific conditions or for certain groups, eg, diabetics, hypertension, heart condition, HIV/Aids;
  • Discusses the development of new pharmaceutical products with Pharmacists and Medical Team;
  • Manages resources to service target groups as effectively as possible;
  • Keeps up to date with medical developments, new drugs, treatments and medications, including complementary medicine;
  • Produces and complies with a work plan developed in partnership with the Director, Medical Services, to ensure all practice and other work is delivered appropriately and safely;
  • Identifies and utilizes appropriately, best practices through benchmarking and clinical guidelines;
  • Develops positive collaborative working relationships across all areas of the Care Team (primary, secondary and social care);
  • Undertakes appropriate clinical risk assessments and implement management strategies for risks identified;
  • Provides management of long term conditions in line with national guidelines and pathways;
  • Maintains clinical records either written or computer based in line with professional code and requirements, utilizing appropriate READ coding and other coding systems.

Other related duties

  • Performs any other duty in the interest of the department that may be assigned from time to time.

Special conditions

Salary

Salary Scale: $2,943,736 – 3,499,176 per annum and any applicable allowances.
