Intake Officers/Counsellors


Purpose
The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to establish a National Child Helpline to provide immediate response/intervention(s) for children who are in crisis, who have been exposed to adverse childhood experiences or who simply need to speak to someone confidentially about matters affecting them. It is expected that the National Child Helpline will be operational on a 24-hour basis for an initial period of eighteen (18) months, with the intention to further extend the operation for incremental periods. For all avoidance of doubt, a child is anyone under eighteen (18) years of age.

Job Opportunity
Intake Officers/Counsellors – Four (4) vacant positions

Under the supervision of the Quality Assurance Coordinator the incumbent will be responsible for  frontline client services in relation to contact being  made with the Helpline by children in Jamaica via the telephone, e-mail, SMS text messages or diverse messaging applications/social media platforms.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science in Counselling, Social Work or equivalent qualification
    from a recognized institution
  • A minimum of two (2) years related working experience

 

Responsibilities

  • Receive and record complaints in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Provide confidential intake counselling services daily to clients and make
    referrals where necessary;
  • Follow-up on children referred for long-term counselling and other
    interventions;
  • Provide recommendations or intervention programmes for children who
    require this support;
  • Provide data to inform quarterly and annual report; and
  • Provide and issue an acknowledgement of matters dealt with and provide
    feedback on follow-up actions taken.

 

Required Competencies

  • Excellent knowledge of the developmental needs of children;
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently observe the principle of confidentiality;
  • Working knowledge of the Child Care and Protection Act, 2004;
  • Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide short-term counselling;
  • Working knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications;
  • Possess the ability to work as part of a team and an organization;
  • Pays keen attention to detail; and
  • Possesses administrative and record-keeping skills.
