Mental Health Officer (RN)

The North East Regional Health Authority, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health with responsibility for the management and delivery of public health services within the parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland, is seeking a strong, dynamic, and proactive individual to fill the position of Mental Health Officer.

Reporting to the Regional Psychiatrist, the incumbent will be responsible for the care of psychiatric patients in their community and the prevention of hospitalization and lengthy rehabilitation by means of early recognition of mental problems.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Registered Mental Nurse or Registered General Nurse;
• Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing Course;
• Registration with the Nursing Council of Jamaica as a RN;
• Knowledge of all aspects of community health;
• Knowledge of research techniques.

Experience

• Minimum three (3) years clinical experience in psychiatric nursing;
• Practical experience in programme planning and management techniques.

Responsibilities will include

• Understanding of human relationships and the effects of social and economic problems on individual, families and communities;
• Assisting in reviewing of the philosophy, objectives and policies of the Community Mental Health Service;
• Assisting in the planning of nursing programmes and informing the supervisor of the needs and problems in areas that may affect implementation;
• Observing and reporting to supervisor, the  resources required for the proper functioning of the Mental Health Service;
• Organizing and operating Mental Health Clinics;
• Assessing continuously, the mental, social and rehabilitative needs of the patient and contributing to management;
• Providing health education, counseling, guidance and emergency response.
