Public Health Nurse

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) invites applications from suitably qualified persons to enlist in the JDF as a Professional Entry Officer to serve as a Public Health Nurse.

Candidate must be a Commonwealth citizen.

Professional & Educational Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing from an accredited institution.
• Certified as a Registered General Nurse and Registered Midwife.
• At least three (3) years post training experience as a Public Health Nurse.

Key Competencies

• Excellent knowledge of and ability to administer maternal and child health care.
• Excellent knowledge of immunization against vaccine preventable diseases.
• Highly skilled in conducting disease surveillance.
• Expertise in developing and imparting health education programmes.
• Expertise in using the epidemiological approach to healthcare to reduce the incidence of mortality and morbidity of chronic non-communicable diseases

Critical & Analytical Thinking Skills

• Strong ability to work in a team setting.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work cohesively within a diverse community.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong attention to details

Attitude

• Must demonstrate the aptitude and desire to assimilate into military life.
• Willingness to work long hours and on weekends.

Military Standards

In addition to the academic qualifications and competencies, candidates must be able to pass the assessment requirements for enlistment in the JDF.

Responsibilities

• Provide clients with information on health education and health promotion;
• Collaborate with other healthcare providers in the administering of maternal and child health care;
• Administer vaccines in accordance with established protocols;
• Engage in disease surveillance;
• Assist in providing a team approach to the care of persons with chronic non-communicable diseases.
