Dental Hygienist


The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) invites suitably qualified persons to enlist in the JDF as a Professional Entry Service Member (PESM) to fill the position of  Dental Hygienist.

Nationality: Be a citizen of the Commonwealth

Professional & Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in Dental Hygiene, or equivalent qualification;
  • Registration with the Dental Council of Jamaica and a valid practicing certificate;
  • A minimum of two (2) years post-qualification experience as a practising Dental Hygienist.

 

Key Competencies

  • Knowledge of best practices in Dental Hygiene;
  • Knowledge of and practice within the legal, ethical and professional boundaries that guide the practice of Dentistry;
  • Excellent and efficient clinical skills;
  • Excellent knowledge and use of proper infection control protocols.

 

Critical and Analytical Thinking Skills

  • Strong ability to work independently;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work closely within a diverse community;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong attention to details.

 

Attitude

Must demonstrate the aptitude and desire to assimilate into military life.

 

Military Standards

In addition to the academic qualifications and competencies, candidates must be able to pass the assessments requirements for enlistment in the JDF.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Administers prophylactic treatment by the scaling and polishing of teeth;
  • Documents area of existing restorations and notable areas of possible decay and disease for review by the dentist;
  • When appropriate, may call in dentist for immediate consultation;
  • Administers fluoride treatment as needed;
  • Place dental sealants as needed;
  • Updates medical history of patient, highlighting significant information for dentist review;
  • Instructs patients in oral hygiene technique, answering patients questions and providing other educational information relevant to oral hygiene;
  • Practices universal precautions and other sterilization and infection control procedures and maintain equipment;
  • Provides associated administrative support including maintaining patient documentation, patient communication and other record keeping;
  • Ensure the Dental Clinic operates with the parameters of the Dental Act of Jamaica.
