Senior Medical Social Worker
Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Senior Medical Social Worker (HPC/MSW 2) in the Medical Social Work Department at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Qualifications
- BSc. in Social Work from an accredited institution;
- Three (3) years related work experience in the management of HIV cases;
- Sound knowledge of voluntary social agencies;
- Knowledge about legislation that safeguard the rights of individuals, especially the most vulnerable;
- Training in provider-initiated testing and counselling certification.
Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Head Medical Social Work Department
- Assess the social, emotional and economic factors relevant to medical diagnosis and treatment and communicate these to other members of the health team;
- Assess patients and incorporate therapeutic case work or group therapy to solve problems that may be causing anxiety, strain or others which may delay response to medical treatment;
- Coordinate and participate with interdisciplinary team members in developing and implementing programmes to improve the psychosocial well-being of clients;
- Help patient to accept and adjust to illness and disability;
- Provide counselling and make referrals to appropriate agencies providing social, educational, financial or rehabilitative services;
- Help patients and their family to use community resources; assist with registration in appropriate agencies, recommend activities which facilitate the necessary social interaction and which provide the necessary therapy;
- Ensure that adequate records are kept and reports done to facilitate continuity of care;
- Maintain accurate records, prepare reports and participate in all training, supervision and HIV response meetings;
- Support the objectives of the Centre for HIV/AIDS Research, Education and Services (CHARES) programme which is to increase the number of patients attaining and maintaining viral suppression;
- Organize and facilitate support groups to address adherence issues.
