Community Mental Health Officer
The North East Regional Health Authority, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health, with responsibility for the management and delivery of Public Health Services within the parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary, and Portland invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Community Mental Health Officer of St. Ann Health Department.
Reporting to the Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, the incumbent will be responsible for the care of psychiatric patients in their community. The prevention of hospitalization and lengthy rehabilitation by means of early recognition of mental problems and to raise the level of mental health in their communities’ hospital.
Qualifications
- Registered Mental Nurse / General Nurse
- Minimum of three (3) years post- registration practice in General Health, Mental Health or other areas of nursing;
- Certification in Psychiatric Nursing (Post- Basic Programme);
- Certificate in Nursing Administration or Management studies from an accredited
institution.
Responsibilities
- Assisting in the development of philosophy, objectives and policies for the Community Mental Services;
- Assisting in the planning of nursing programmes and informs the supervisor of the needs and problems in the area that may affect the implementation of those programmes;
- Observing and reporting to supervisor, the lack of services required for the proper functioning of the service to meet the community needs.
- Participating in setting priorities of service and plans his/her work to meet the approval priorities;
- Maintaining records and reports that are necessary for providing continuity of care, evaluation of the service and for the collection of statistics;
- Supplying statistical returns on a monthly/annual basis as is required by the service;
- Assessing continuously in the psychiatric, social and rehabilitative needs of the patient and contributes to diagnosis and treatment.
Specific knowledge required
- Good leadership, administrative, communication, diagnostic/problem-solving skills;
- Ability to use initiative and to work on own with minimal supervision;
- Evidence of good health and emotional stability required for the demands of the position;
- Ability to foster an environment which is conducive to the well-being of the staff and clients they serve.
