Patient Care Assistant
The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA), a Statutory Body under the Ministry of Health responsible for the management and operation of Public Health Services within the Parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the following position:
PATIENT CARE ASSISTANT (HSC/HS 5)
salary range $1,792,163 - $2,130,319 per annum and any allowance(s) attached to the post.
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Nurse in Charge, the incumbent will be responsible for providing basic patient care, including hygiene, preventive skincare, feeding, mobility, range of motion and application of safety measures to all patients.
Qualifications
- Completion of Secondary School with a minimum of two (2) ‘O’ Level/CXC subjects or equivalent, inclusive of English Language;
- Certificate in Practical Nursing (HEART Certified-NCTVET Allied Health Care Level 2);
- At least two (2) years experience.
Responsibilities
- Carrying out simple Nursing procedures to meet the physical needs of patients. These include bed baths or supervise ambulant patients with their baths, mouth care, hair washing and combing, shaving, nail clipping;
- Cleaning and caring of Hospital equipment and appliances. e.g. suction machine;
- Assisting in tidying and keeping patients’ areas clean and properly ventilated, eg, bed-making, cleaning lockers;
- Assisting patients with removal of bedpans and urinals, observes and reports contents;
- Ensuring that patients are properly changed in gowns/clothing when necessary;
- Accompanying patients from one location to another for treatment, tests, transfer and discharges as directed by nurse in charge;
- Assisting patients with diets i.e. serving, feeding and cleaning utensils;
- Makes cribs and bassinettes where necessary;
- Collects routine urine specimen to/from Laboratory;
- Care of pressure areas, back sacrum, shoulders, elbows, heels, etc;
- Tidies patients’ environment for hand-over to next shift;
- Assisting in discharge of patients and returns belongings to patient/family according to hospital policy.

- Ability to understand verbal and written instructions, and to work under guidance;
- Conforms to rules and regulations;
- Good verbal communication skills;
- Possess good customer service skills;
- Excellent interpersonal relationship skill.
Special conditions associated with the job
- May be required to work beyond normal working hours to include holidays and weekends;
- Light physical effort is required e.g. frequent sitting, standing or walking or a requirement for regular handling of lightweight objects.
