Medical Officer
The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) invites applications from suitably qualified persons to enlist in the JDF as a Professional Entry Officer to serve as a Medical Officer.
Candidate must be a Commonwealth citizen.
Professional & Educational Requirements
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree from an accredited institution;
- Registration with the Medical Council if Jamaica;
- Valid practicing certificate;
- At least two (2) years post-internship experience;
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

- Must be willing to work at military outstation medical clinics;

- Must perform duties within the legal, ethical and professional boundaries of the profession.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work cohesively within a diverse community;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Meticulous attention to details;
- Good judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Attitude
- Must demonstrate the aptitude and desire to assimilate into military life.
Military Standards
In addition to the academic qualifications and competencies, candidates must be able to pass the assessment requirements for enlistment in the JDF.
Responsibilities
- Examine, diagnose and treat personnel and their families;
- Request medical investigations (eg. blood tests and x-rays) as necessary); appropriately deal with and communicate abnormalities to patients;
- Interpret radiographs and other diagnostic tests and create suitable treatment plans;
- Document all medical history, physical examination and proposed treatment as per medical form F-MEd;
- Monitor and follow-up patients, particularly those referred to external Physicians;
- Liaise with doctors in tertiary facilities and visit service members/dependents who are admitted, to follow-up on their care progress, advising the Force Medical Officer and respective Commanding Officers as necessary;
- Examine potential recruits, potential officers and potential Professional Entry Service Members (PESMs) and determine their fitness for acceptance in the JDF;
- Conduct random medical inspection of troops and their accommodations;
- Liaise with other healthcare providers (eg. Nurses, Pharmacist, Physiotherapist, Dentist) to maximize the overall health outcomes for service members and their dependents;
- Conduct Medical Boards as directed, ensuring timely completion and reporting;
- Full compliance with Force and Corps Standing Orders;
- Other duties as assigned.
