The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA), a Statutory Body under the Ministry of Health & Wellness responsible for the management and operation of Public Health Services within the Parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the following position at Percy Junor Hospital: Psychiatric Nursing Aide (HSC/HS 5) – VACANT (Male – 1 Position)
Salary Range: $1,792,163 - $2,130,319 per annum and any allowance (s) attached to the post
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Mental Health Nurse Practitioner/ Mental Health Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting with the care and health education of mentally ill patients and their families in the primary care setting.
Qualifications and Experience
- Psychiatric Nursing Aide Certification from a recognized institution;
- A minimum of two (2) subjects at CXC or GCE equivalent including English Language and a numeric subject;
- At least one (1) year working experience as a PNA is a definite asset.
Responsibilities
- Assists with the rehabilitation of persons living with mental disorders;
- Patients registers and records of patients visits in the community setting maintained;
- Collects urine samples and does simple urine tests as directed by the Nurse;
- Assists in pressure area care and positioning of immobilized clients;
- Assists with monitoring clients’ vital signs and reports to the Nurse in Charge;
- Cleans and cares for equipment and appliances;
- Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment for client care;
- Assists clients with meeting nutritional, hygienic, physiological and psychological needs as is required;
- Escorts patients to the hospital for treatment and diagnostic procedures;
- Participates in occupational and group activities geared towards assisting clients in the rehabilitation process;
- Observes for changes in client’s behaviour and reports to the nurse-in-charge;
- Utilizes therapeutic communication to enhance effective staff/patient relationship;
- Provides support in emergency situations in Community Psychiatric Emergency Outreach Team by assisting with the care and physical restraint of clients who are at risk for injury to self and/or others;
- Assists the Mental Health Nurse with patient care during domiciliary visits;
- Provides support by monitoring clients activities during clinic sessions;
- Assists in maintaining clients registers and enters relevant client data on daily worksheets and other forms as assigned;
- Assists with conducting mental health educational/promotional activities in the health clinic;
Required skills and competencies
- Psychiatric Nursing Practices & Principles;
- General understanding of mental health and behavioural disorders;
- Knowledge of skills in safe restraining techniques;
- Lifting procedures;
- Health and safety procedures and precaution;
- Good oral and written communication skills;
- Good interpersonal and Customer Service Skills.
Working conditions
- Required to work outside of the normal working hours;
- Working with patients who might exhibit violent/aggressive behaviour.
