Chief Biomedical Engineer ST 6

The North East Regional Health Authority, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health & Wellness, with responsibility for the management and delivery of Public Health Services within the parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary, and Portland invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Chief Biomedical Engineer (SOG/ST 6) assigned to the Regional Health Facilities Maintenance Unit.
Summary
Under the general direction of the Regional Manager, Maintenance & Engineering, the incumbent is responsible for participating in the information of maintenance policies and plans for the Regional Health Authority, as well as providing specialist assistance to the health facilities on preventative and corrective maintenance of highly technical biomedical equipment and/or solicit assistance locally or overseas.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering OR Electrical Engineering with a major in Instrumentation plus
- Minimum of three (3) years at the level of a Head of a Biomedical Engineering Department in a major hospital.
Responsibilities
- Provides technical advice, codes and standards for biomedical equipment used in health care facilities in the public sector.
- Collaborate with the Electrical and Civil Engineers in the establishment of a library of manufacturers’ resource materials, current manuals and periodicals on clinical equipment for training and reference purposes.
- Monitor the reported preventative and corrective maintenance data for biomedical equipment as entered by the Regional Maintenance Units on the Maintenance Management System and make assessments as to condition, performance and the application of accepted maintenance standards.
- Perform complex diagnosis of biomedical equipment failures and system problems in response to requests from the Region’s Health Facilities.
- Participate in the establishment of operating guidelines for the Regional Maintenance Unit.
- Contribute to the development of National Standards for the certification of Electro Mechanical Technicians and Artisans. Liaise with relevant local and overseas agencies in order to develop internationally acceptable standards.
- Design and implement training programmes for Regional Biomedical Technicians.
- Collaborate with the Regional Maintenance Manager and Director, Human Resource and Industrial Relations, to determine the priority areas.
- Train patient care and technical service personnel on the use of new and modified equipment according to internally developed requirements.
- Evaluate and make recommendations regarding biomedical equipment being considered for purchase, giving consideration to each model’s performance ranges, the operational capabilities of the users involved and the frequency of use.
- Perform pre-acceptance inspections of biomedical equipment and develop preventative maintenance procedures on newly acquired equipment.
- Conduct audits of Regional Maintenance Systems to determine if maintenance procedures relating to medical
electronic equipment are being adhered to and standards met. Take action to avert problems that are indicated and monitor outcome. - Provide expert advice to Senior Management on all matters pertaining to biomedical equipment. Maintain contact with major manufacturers and agents of clinical equipment.
- Develop innovations to keep the maintenance costs for biomedical equipment to a minimum while ensuring safety and reliability.
- Maintain professional growth and development through professional affiliations, conferences, manufacturers` seminars, internet correspondence etc, to keep abreast of the current information, norms and standards in the field.
Salary Scale
$5,198,035 – $6,990,779 per annum
