Junior Resident


Applications are invited from dynamic, self motivated, and success oriented persons to fill the following positions:

Junior Resident (HPC/MO 1)

Under the general direction of the Consultant, Psychiatry, the Resident (Medical Officer) is ultimately responsible for ensuring the best possible care for patients at the Bellevue Hospital in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s Policies. Undertakes all duties as required by the job and relates any problems or incidences (solved or unsolved) to the Senior Medical Officer/ Consultant.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited institution with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.
  • Annual Practising Certificate from Medical Council of Jamaica
  • Certificate of Registration from Medical Council of Jamaica

  

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To attend the ward daily and clerk full history as instructed and to attend rounds and to record daily changes/opinion/progress in the docket of each case reviewed
  • To review all new admissions, all critical and problem cases within 24 hours of admission and to report immediately all critical cases to Senior Resident/Consultant of the Firm
  • To ensure that all problem cases of the firm must be informed /handed over to the duty Medical Officer before leaving hospital for the day
  • To attend ward rounds on weekends while on duty and to review new admissions, review problems cases and cases in seclusion rooms along with second on call Doctor of duty.
  • To ensure that a standard psychiatric history is taken, working diagnosis and treatment is initiated using Bio-Psycho- Social frame work.
  • To ensure that physical examination, laboratory and psychometric tests are conducted and regular vitals are entered for all inpatients as required based on Bellevue Hospital minimum guidelines for acute, sub-acute and chronic in patients.
  • To review ALL old patients and making necessary adjustment of diagnoses and medications under guidance of the Senior Residents/Consultant/Senior Medical Officer.
  • To attend discharge rounds and record final diagnosis and to ensure referrals are made to community mental health clinics for follow up.
  • To liaise with Psychiatrist/Community Mental Health Team to ensure timely follow up was provided to rapid cycling patients with history of potential violence.
  • To offer technical advice to Interns and clinical staff of the management team and to Community Mental Health Officers and Psychiatric Aides in the hospitals and clinics.
  • To participate and monitor assertive outreach programme, home visits and crisis response as needed.
  • To attend, clerk, diagnose and initiate treatment and offer counselling to all child and adolescent psychiatric cases and make appropriate referrals to relevant clinics, agencies and CISOCA under guidance of the Senior Resident/Consultant/Senior Medical Officer.
  • To assess forensic psychiatric cases and provide fitness to plea report to court under the guidance of the Senior Resident/Consultant/Senior Medical Officer.
  • To participate Disaster/Outbreak management planning and to offer Critical Incident Stress Management and be a leader or member of the counselling team during and after Disaster.
  • To assess and screen substance abusers and to initiate treatment and crisis intervention management and to make appropriate referrals to Rehabilitation centres under guidance of the Senior Resident/Consultant/Senior Medical Officer.
  • To serve as a member of the psychiatric medical board
  • To visit Residential and Community Halfway Houses, Infirmaries and to attend Geriatric psychiatric cases as required.
  • To participate in teaching, research and training activities as required.
  • To plan, organize and execute mental health education and promotion activities in the hospitals/clinics and in the community as required.
  • To refer patients to psychologists, social workers and other agencies as needed.
  • To provide reports to requesting parties and agencies by following release of information protocol manual MOH under guidance of the Senior Resident/Consultant/Senior Medical Officer.
  • To collaborate with medical officers of clinics/hospitals in general health care delivery.
  • To submit reports to Senior Resident/Consultant/Senior Medical Officer as instructed in a format provided
  • To participate in regular meetings as required.
  • To attend, lead and initiate formation of relevant patient support groups.
  • To liaise with other clinical firms and relevant supporting services of the hospital to ensure services for patients are provided in an efficient and effective manner.
  • To respond promptly to the complaints according to the guidelines issued by the Regional Authority and to report promptly to the immediate supervisor.
  • To continually motivate members of the team in order to provide quality psychiatric service with accountability and responsibility
  • Any other duties assigned.

 

Authority to

  • Make recommendations to effectively and efficiently improve the care of patients on firm.  

 

Specific Knowledge Required

Working knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act
  • Knowledge of National Health Policy, National Mental Health Policy, Mental Health Strategic Plan and Strategic direction of the hospital
  • Knowledge of Best Practices of PAHO /WHO
  • Knowledge of new trends and development in Psychiatry
