Psychiatric Nurse


Applications are invited from dynamic, self motivated, and success oriented persons to fill the following position:

Psychiatric Nurse (NPG/RN 1)

Under the general supervision of the Charge Nurse or Ward Sister, the Psychiatric Nurse is responsible for the daily supervision of specified areas while functioning within the current legislation affecting the practice of Nursing in Jamaica, the International Council of Nurses and the policies and practice of the Bellevue Hospital.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing
  • Valid Nursing License

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of Psychiatric Nursing principles and techniques in developing the potential for optimum health, and providing opportunity for the patients to use their mental capacities constructively.
  • Identify the emotional needs of the patient and the formulation of a plan of care to meet these needs and consults with the Charge Nurse/Ward Sister as required, in the implementation of Nursing Care Plan.
  • Serves as a liaison between Charge Nurse/Ward Sister and Nursing Personnel under the supervision of the NPG R/N 1 Level 2.
  • Participate in prescribed occupational and therapeutic procedures for each patient assigned; encourage patients to participate in work,  occupational and recreational activities in order to promote speedy recovery.
  • Prompt implementation of rehabilitation procedures and programmes as soon as the
    patient/client is brought to the unit for treatment.
  • Attend to the comfort of patients/clients, encourages helpful mental attitudes. Observes patients/ clients’ mental and physical behaviour and reports their progress. Accurate charting of significant changes in patients/clients’ behaviour and progress.
  • Contributes to the improvement of the Psychiatric Nursing through participation in ward conferences, case conferences, symposia on Psychiatric  Nursing Care and provides clear and easily understood explanations, effect change in Medical regimen, assist with psychotherapy or any other prescribed treatment modalities, eg. Chemotherapy (administration of drugs).
  • Assist in the education of the relatives of the patients/clients with regard to the total patient care in and out of the hospital/psychiatric unit.
  • Participates in Inservice Education programmes including on the job learning, as necessary and takes responsibility for ongoing educational and professional development.
  • Participates in activities designed to assist the Hospital. Psychiatric Unit and Nursing Administration in improving the services offered by the Hospital/Psychiatric Unit.
  • Performs therapeutic measures, presented and delegated by Medical and Nursing authorities.
  • Assist Charge Nurse/Ward Sister in maintain high standards of care such as:
    o Participates in planning, directing, coordinating and implementing patient care.
    o Cooperate in the implementation of change.
  • Teaches and directs non-professional nursing personnel for whom s/he is assigned responsibility.
  • Assists with the creation of a therapeutic environment with regards to the total needs (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.) of the patient/client bearing in mind that the ward/unit might have patients/clients who suffer from different psychiatric illnesses and will require specialized, individualized care, for example:
    o Providing an area which has very little stimulation for the hyperactive
    patient/client.

o Ensuring that the area has sufficient therapeutic activities for the productive channelling of the destructive behaviour that the patient/client might have eg. Tearing bits of paper for use in art and craft.

  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, and proper use of chemicals and solutions
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
