Director, National Blood Transfusion Service (MDG/MO 5)


JOB PURPOSE

Plan, direct organize and control the technical operations of the National Blood Transfusion Service in a manner consistent with the policies of the Ministry of Health through the Blood Bank Advisory Committee and with ultimate responsibilities for clinical and legal aspects of the operation.

 

Qualifications

  • Medical Doctor with Post Graduate qualification in Haematology and transfusion Medicine
  • Supervisory management with Special reference to Blood Transfusion Services
  • 5 years post graduate experience in Haematology and Transfusion Medicine

 

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Plan, direct, organize and control the technical operations of the National Blood transfusion Service island wide in collaboration with the Blood Bank Advisory Committee with ultimate responsibilities for clinical and legal aspects of the operation
  • Define the organizational structure of the Blood Transfusion Service and the job description of each member of staff and co-ordinate all activities
  • Give technical directions and establish standards in the Central Blood Bank, Blood Collection Centres, Regional Centres and Rural Hospital Laboratories according to international regulations of WHO and International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT)
  • Advise and direct the blood donor recruitment, education programmes and publicity campaigns
  • Direct Training porgammes in Blood banking and immunohematology for Medical Students, Nurses, Medical Technologists and other paramedical groups
  • Ensure the maintenance of equipment and buildings at the Central Blood Bank and Rural Blood Centres
  • Consultant Haematologist with clinical responsibilities at the Kingston Public Hospital – admitting and treating patients with haematological diseases and operating and out-patient clinic at the above Hospital, and laboratory patients referred from other hospitals throughout the island
  • Research – engage in relevant research of value to the Public Health Sector of the Ministry of Health

 

Required Competencies

  • Excellent management and leadership skills
  • Excellent knowledge of blood banking and immunohematology
